In the framework of the project “The Redesign of the Egyptian Museum, Midan Tahrir”, financed by the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, an opening ceremony will be held on the 4th of May 2008 at 11.30 a.m., at the premises of the Supreme Council for Antiquities (3, El Adel el Abu Bakr street, Zamalek, Cairo), to celebrate the beginning of the training Courses for Egyptian Curators and Conservators in the field of Museology and Conservation of Cultural Heritage.
The Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr. Zahi Hawass, the Ambassador of Italy, H.E. Claudio Pacifico and the Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Giuseppe Proietti, will attend the ceremony.
The project aims at developing a Master Plan for the architectural reorganization of the Egyptian Museum of Midan Tahrir and at enhancing the professional competences of the personnel of the Egyptian museums, by carrying out training activities in the field of restoration. The training programme will be carried out by the renowned Italian Superior Institute for Conservation and Restoration (ISCR) of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage.
With the purpose of boosting the cooperation between Egypt and Italy in the cultural field, on the 17th of June 2007 a Memorandum of Understanding on the abovementioned project was signed between the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr. Zahi Hawass, and the former Ambassador of Italy, H.E. Antonio Badini. Following the signature of the Memorandum, on the 6th of December 2007, a joint declaration was signed between the Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage, Francesco Rutelli and the Egyptian Minister of Culture, Farouk Hosni, aiming at further strengthening the cooperation in the field of cultural heritage and at stating the importance of “The Redesign of the Egyptian Museum, Midan Tahrir” project.
